This unit will focus on understanding grief and loss in the context of child reunification. You will learn how to develop strategies that will help you cope when faced with grief and loss while exploring some of the associated feelings and experiences. You will be introduced briefly to disenfranchised grief, anticipatory grief, and ambiguous loss.
Expressive Outcomes
1. Apply learning from Units 1 to 7 to co-create strategies for effective transitions.
2. Develop positive solutions to support children and youth navigating transitions.

Reflective Activities
When joining the synchronous sessions, you will take part in small group and whole group plenary discussions. When you are in these discussions, remember to ‘take space, make space’:
- Create a safe space
- Be aware of how you impact others
- Be mindful of your privilege
- Share your thoughts when you have something to say
This is a respectful practice that allows everyone to join in the discussion, so we benefit from the collective wisdom. Remember that it’s not only answers we look for, we also want questions that provoke thought and cause us to pause to reflect on our own perspectives in light of what others have to say. While some of us might like to speak publicly, share experiences, and answer questions, others might feel intimidated. Be reflective about your style of participation – if you’re sharing a lot, make space for others to contribute to the discussion, invite them in. If you’ve been quiet, take space, and share your thoughts and experiences.
Scenarios
You will be given one of six scenarios to examine, as well as associated guiding questions for your scenario. You will look at the scenario individually, and then in a small group. Finally, in a plenary session, each small group will present a summary of the scenario, as well as their ideas in support of a positive transition for the children/youth. In your small group discussion, you will need to choose someone to jot down the key takeaways in preparation for the plenary session.
The process for the scenario examination is as follows:
- Individually, read the scenario.
- In your small group, using the guiding questions you were provided with, recognize the scenario key points, develop appropriate actions and responses, identify unhelpful actions and responses.
- In the plenary session, present a summary of the key points, actions, and responses; answer scenario-related questions from the other participants. Consider the following:
- What insights do you have about the topic and developing a path forward to support a successful transition?
- In which topics or issues were people most interested?
- Any other comments?
Wrap up
At the end of the unit, you will be asked to share one takeaway gained during the discussions and scenario presentations. This takeaway could be something that has changed your thinking and/or something that you believe will change your practice as a caregiver going forward. The takeaway is not meant to be feedback on the facilitation or content of TTT, as you will be given another opportunity for that type of feedback.
Resources used for presentation:
No new resources will be provided or are required for this unit. Below are support resources listed in previous units:
Unit Notes
In the context of child and youth reunification, this unit will build on your learning from the previous seven units as we focus on exploring a variety of scenarios that describe hypothetical transition situations. Based on your examination of the scenarios, we will ask you to develop strategies to support healthy transitions. You will be asked to respond to several questions and engage in discussions through the lens of relationships, The Act, Trauma-informed Practice, policy, advocacy, as well as grief and loss as they relate to supporting effective transitions.
Confidentiality
When taking part in the synchronous sessions, please be aware of the confidentiality of your discussions with other foster parents. In the context of this training, it is important that we acknowledge foster parents as experts. This training module has been built on the advice from foster parents, guided by their input, and emphasizes their collective knowledge.
Participation
Your participation in the discussions is an important component of everyone’s learning, so please share your thoughts and questions in the small group discussions and the plenary sessions. The badges for each unit are partially dependent on participation. At the end of the unit, you will be asked to share one takeaway gained during the presentation and discussion. This takeaway could be something that has changed your thinking and/or something that you believe will change your practice as a caregiver going forward.
Please add your unit takeaway to the text box below.
For example, what did you learn that could change the way you practice caregiving?
Please note, this is not unit feedback for the facilitator to improve unit content and/or instruction, rather we are interested to know what you might do differently after taking part in the unit training and discussions.
